View Point

Originally designed as a 1980’s style contemporary our clients sought to transform it into a coastal Maine Shingle Style residence. The project involved renovating the core portions of the existing residence and adding expansive additions at each end as well as doubling the size of the main Living Room. The existing house was stripped down to the studs and we created the Shingle Style look by adding new cedar shingles, areas of natural stone, windows, and detail. The new expanded Living Room remains the focal point space designed as a two story volume with a wood barrel ceiling. Surrounded by banks of windows on three sides the dramatic ocean views are brought into the light filled space.

New additions housing a Master Bed Room Suite on one side and a vaulted Family Room on the other act as supporting bookends to the Living Room. Exterior cedar shingles and natural stone act together to ground the house to the site. The interior is designed to accentuate formal and informal zones and to maximize the views from each space. Heavy trim with columns and coffered ceilings enhance the formal Living and Dining Rooms while simpler exposed beams and lighter trim adorn the Kitchen and Family room. Our clients entertain regularly and the house was re-imagined to meet those needs. Guests can retreat to one of four bed room suites, enjoy an expansive recreation room complete with sauna and swim in the grotto inspired pool.
